AWS: The Market Leader
AWS has the largest Australian market share, the deepest local partner ecosystem, the most extensive service catalogue, and the most mature Australian compliance certifications. If you’re building something new without a specific reason to choose otherwise, AWS is the default. The main challenges are cost complexity and the steep learning curve across its breadth of services.
Azure: The Enterprise and Government Choice
Azure is the natural choice for businesses already invested in Microsoft technology — Microsoft 365, Active Directory, SQL Server, .NET stacks. Microsoft licensing bundling offers meaningful cost advantages. If your primary use case is data analytics or you’re building significant ML capabilities, GCP deserves serious evaluation. Smaller Australian market share means a smaller local partner ecosystem — a practical consideration for ongoing operations and staffing.

Most SMEs should not pursue a multi-cloud strategy. The operational complexity, additional tooling for consistent security across providers, and training burden of maintaining expertise across multiple platforms outweighs the theoretical benefits of vendor independence. Choose one platform, become excellent at it, and revisit in 3-5 years.
